Breaking Free From Society
“Listen, smile, agree, and then do whatever the f*** you were going to do anyway.” – Robert Downey Jr.
Society has had a special and bolstering effect on humans since the dawn of time. There is a reason we cannot live alone – because we have evolved alongside other humans and we need their company to survive the harshness of the outer world.
But as with all positive effects, there are negative effects of living in a society too, especially when it comes to the repressive effects that society can have on a person’s consciousness and their dreams.
That’s why, while it is important to consider what the people around you will think of your actions, it is also important not to let their opinions or potential opinions dictate what your eventual course will be. Listen to advice, but then go on and do what you want to eventually. Why? Because it is your life, and at the end of the day only you will be responsible for your decisions, no matter how much advice you listen to, so why not make the choices you want.
The sort of dictation you see from society depends a lot on what kind of background you have. It is seen a lot more in conservative and collectivist societies like those of the east. But even in individualistic societies it can be hard to get away from the insidious influence of public opinion.
In general, being aware of the pitfalls and being rational about one’s choices, taking advice where necessary but also being conscious of one’s own opinions is the way to go. It’s not difficult but it takes some getting used to.
